Evening and Weekend Appointments

We offer a range of NHS urgent and routine appointments on weekday evenings and at weekends through hubs across Sheffield All sites are existing GP surgeries and are staffed by Sheffield GPs and other practice staff. The services available include urgent appointments with a GP and practice nurse appointments for routine services such as blood pressure checks, removal of stitches, dressing changes, asthma reviews/checks, diabetes reviews/checks, ear syringing, smears and blood tests. We also offer physio assessments for musculoskeletal pain. Hub appointments can be booked through your usual GP practice or by contacting 111 when your GP practice is closed.

Physiotherapists in the GP Hubs are able to offer an initial assessment and advice for musculoskeletal pain.

Should you need a doctor outside surgery hours there are several options.  For severe emergencies, e.g. unconscious, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, call 999 for an ambulance.  If you think you just need advice dial 111.  You could also attend Sheffield’s Walk-in Centre which is open every day from 8a.m. until 10p.m. at Broad Lane, S1 4BT for advice and treatment, including emergency contraception.  No appointment necessary call 0114 241 2700.  The Minor Injuries Unit is based at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and will deal with broken bones, cuts and bruises  0114 271 2071.

The practice is part of the Sheffield GP Collaborative.  If you call the surgery out of hours you will hear a message telling you to redial either 111 or the GP collaborative as follows –

Please remember that the out of hours service should not be used for routine matters that would wait until the following surgery or to request repeat prescriptions.

 111 is a free 24 hour, 7 day a week call handling service designed to deal with non emergency calls, and if you have an urgent medical problem when we are closed you can ring this number.

Calls to 111 will be taken by non-clinical call handlers who will be fully trained in the use of clinically developed pathways, which will take you through a series of questions leading to an advised solution to the problem you are ringing about.

This is known as the “route of disposition” and can include options such as

  • see a dentist,
  • speak to an out of hours GP,
  • see an out of hours GP or
  • attend A&E.

So if you ring our Surgery number when we are closed, you will hear a message asking you to hang up and call 111 or the GP collaborative depending on when you call; calls to 111 are free from both landlines and mobile numbers.  

Minor Illness

If you require advice on any Minor Ailments whilst the surgery is closed, please see your local pharmacist or call 111 for advice.  Your local pharmacist will be able to give you free health advice. The Wicker Chemist operates extended hours every day. Tel: 0114 2727676

Emergency GP

If you need to see an emergency GP when we are closed, phone the surgery and your call will be automatically transferred to the 111 out of hours emergency GP service.

Emergency Dentist

Call your dentist: their answerphone may advise where to get out-of-hours treatment.

If you need a to see an emergency dentist, please call 111 for advice and to find an out-of-hours dental service near you.

Emergency Contraception

Sheffield Walk-In Centre for adults & children

Located at the Sheffield City GP Health Centre, Rockingham House, Broad Lane, S1 3PB. The NHS Walk in Centre is open from 8am to 10 pm 265 days per year. Members of the public can walk-in as an unregistered patient and see a nurse or GP without an appointment for a range of minor illnesses and ailments.

The walk in centre cannot deal with long term conditions that are managed by your own GP, injuries requiring X Ray, Sick notes, Dental Problems, Ear Syringing, dressings or prescriptions.

Out-of-hours services are generally busy so please think carefully before asking to see a doctor and only do so if you genuinely cannot wait until the surgery re-opens.

Sheffield Minor Injuries Unit – adults (over 16) only

Located on B Floor, Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield, S10 2JF. Open 8am – 8pm. No appointment necessary. Tel 0114 2712071.

The Minor Injuries Unit provides non-life threatening injuries or illnesses such as sprains & strains, wound infections, minor burns & scalds, insect & animal bites, Rib injuries. They also treat minor eye injuries after 4:30pm during week days and anytime over the weekend.

The unit cannot treat injuries to the chest, back or bone injuries to the hips or thighs.

Sheffield Hospitals Accident and Emergency Departments

An emergency is a situation where someone is experiencing a loss of consciousness, heavy bleeding, suspected broken bones, chest pain, breathing difficulties, an overdose, has swallowed something harmful, poisoning or has a deep wound.

If the situation is life threatening go to your nearest A&E Hospital or call 999.

Enhanced Access Appointments

Remote and face-to-face appointments can be made with a variety of GP practice staff including Doctors, Advance Care Practitioners, Nurses, Nurse Associates, Health Care Assistants, Physiotherapists and, Pharmacists. Initially appointments can be booked through you practice reception team.  Appointments are based at Flowers Health Centre and Norwood Medical Centre.
